Unveiling the Secrets of High-Efficiency Fish Attractants and Their Applications

There are many aquatic feed additives on the market, designed to stimulate appetite and promote growth. Let’s uncover their true functions now.

Mechanism of Action of DMPT

DMPT (Dimethyl-β-propiothetin) is a highly efficient olfactory-stimulating aquatic nutritional attractant. It effectively promotes fish appetite and enhances their resistance to disease, high temperatures, and hypoxia. DMPT is highly safe, non-toxic, and leaves no residue. It contains sulfonium molecular groups to which fish are highly sensitive, effectively stimulating the animal’s olfactory and gustatory senses, thereby stimulating appetite and increasing feed intake.

Regarding usage, it should be applied in appropriate amounts and can be mixed with most common commercial baits (though the dosage should be reduced). This attractant is particularly suitable for common fish species such as crucian carp, carp, grass carp, and tilapia. It performs especially well under high temperatures, low water temperatures, and in low-oxygen environments, but its effectiveness is not significant in low-temperature conditions below 15°C during winter.

The characteristics and uses of TMAO
TMAO gives fish a unique flavor, which is the main component of the fishy taste. When fish die, the oxidized trimethylamine in their bodies is partially reduced by microorganisms into trimethylamine, thereby generating a fishy smell. In addition, oxidized trimethylamine also participates in the regulation of osmotic pressure in fish bodies, inducing and promoting cell division, showing obvious appetizing and promoting effects.

Attractant Effects of Betaine and Riboflavin

Betaine exhibits a strong attractant effect, derived from glycine betaine found in sugar beets. It not only imparts a sweet taste but also contains umami flavors that are highly perceptible to fish and shrimp. This combination provides strong stimulation to both the olfactory and gustatory senses of fish, resulting in excellent attractant properties and making it a key feeding stimulant in aquaculture feed. Anhydrous betaine offers particularly intense sweet and umami stimulation to fish. Notably, fish possess a unique taste perception for betaine, which can also enhance their gustatory response to other amino acids. Therefore, using betaine in combination with amino acids yields synergistic effects.

Riboflavin (Vitamin B2) attracts fish to feed through its fluorescent yellow coloration. For fish, it offers multiple benefits, including promoting feed intake, enhancing digestive function, and increasing the visual conspicuity of bait.
