It is used in the synthesis of bacampicillin, sultamicillin, and other compounds. In organic synthesis chemistry, it serves as a phase transfer catalyst in reactions such as halogen displacement, redox reactions, N-alkylation, and dichlorocarbene generation. It also acts as a curing accelerator in powder coatings, epoxy resins, and other polymerizations, as well as a phase-change energy storage material in refrigeration systems.
